#766 mirror

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.  That is how I feel about "selfies"!

Regardless of how I feel, there is a growing movement of people taking pictures of themselves, which often results in nothing more than an out-of-proportion shot of their face, absent any landmarks or photograph-worthy background.  Selfies that are taken in a car look about the same as those shot in front of gorgeous scenery.  Our students recently went on a trip to Europe and the faculty leader lamented about how taking selfies seemed more important to them than the art they were viewing.

Selfie has become so prevalent that it has been added to the latest edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.  A British company named it word of the year last year.

Like them or not, selfies are here to stay, at least for awhile.  How can your organization capitalize on them and encourage others to incorporate your message into their pictures and postings?  I just gave blood and a poster promoted taking a selfie during the donation and then sharing it so others to do the same.  Surely your organization is doing something more exciting than needles which could be the basis for a selfie campaign of your own!
